Apple Will Select Google Gemini for Gen AI, Not OpenAI
That’s my opinion, not yet a reported fact. Google has a long partnership history with Apple. The idea of Apple partnering with OpenAI is too fraught with risk from a corporate governance standpoint, to potentially playing second fiddle to OpenAI partner Microsoft, to Sam Altman and team not paying enough attention to partner relationships. As it stands, Microsoft insiders feel they have become the technology backoffice to OpenAI. That does not exactly paint Microsoft in an aspirational light.
I am fully aware that OpenAI has the edge with its GPT model over Gemini. However, imagine the training and inference boost Gemini’s LLMs would get if iPhone users connect Apple Health, Facetime, iMessage, Live Caption and more to “Siri powered by Gemini”. I would love to see Apple and Google create a JV around AI compute resources. Compute resources are absolutely the gating factor with respect to the pace at which LLMs evolve.
