We measured NASDAQ 100 CEOs in terms of their compensation per unit of revenue growth.

  1. We used CEO compensation as reported by the respective company in the most recent reporting period.

  2. We used Revenue CAGR generated during the respective CEO’s tenure.

  3. We divided number 1 by number 2 to arrive at a figure that represents the CEO compensation cost per percentage point of Revenue CAGR.

  • For example, Tesla (TSLA) CEO Elon Musk was paid $0 in the most recent period. TSLA has generated a 68% Revenue CAGR during Musk’s CEO tenure (#2 Revenue CAGR among NASDAQ 100 CEOs), therefore Musk was paid $0 per percentage point of Revenue CAGR.

  • Another example, DoorDash (DASH) CEO Tony Xu was paid $316K in the most recent period. DASH has generated a 44% Revenue CAGR during Xu’s CEO tenure (#9 Revenue CAGR among NASDAQ 100 CEOs), therefore Xu was paid $7,192 per percentage point of Revenue CAGR.

  • Thus, Musk and Xu represent good values relative to the NASDAQ 100 CEO cohort.
