Google Will Benefit from OpenAI's Sora Shutdown
When OpenAI walked away from Sora this week it meant lots of video traffic would make its way to Gemini. My guess 90% of it. In fact, Gemini has been gummed up over the past two days on the image generation side, even on the paid tier.
The LLM game was always one of attrition. Capital is not limitless. OpenAI may have raised $110 billion, but that is not a license to chase 42 different initiatives. Earlier this week OpenAI walked away from Sora, which I believe was burning at least $12 million per day.
Anthropic is the runt of the LLM litter, even having recently raised $30 billion it is undercapitalized. Time for Anthropic to sell to Google. What a win that would be for Google. Anthropic clearly has the secret sauce on the agentic coding side, while Google is the LLM laggard, yet has the deepest pockets and broadest canvas of in-house use cases.
