I Support META's Open Source Approach To Gen AI
I generally support open source software and especially in the case of Gen AI. I don’t like the idea of the best Gen AI models being closed, especially given that they have the power to do great harm (deep fakes are one such example).
Further, to deliver the full promise of AGI, Gen AI models must be as transparent and secure as possible. In closed environments, only the company that owns the IP and hackers that are sophisticated enough to steal the models (state sponsored hackers) have full access to the frontier model. Open Source models are natively more secure given that they have more people scrutinizing the model.
Most importantly, META’s open source approach is far cheaper to users than comparable models offered by OpenAI, Google and Anthropic to name several competitors. This means that META’s Llama model will lend itself better to entrepreneurs in their creative pursuits.
I’m interested to see what people do with Llama and Groq’s LPUs. The combination of Llama and Groq is quite powerful and inexpensive.
