Mediocrity Is Unbecoming of Google
I am writing this because it is embarrassing how far Google Gemini 3.1 has fallen behind Opus 4.6 and codex 5.4 on the coding front.
Google (GOOG) clearly lacks a sense of urgency. Google ought to be so far ahead of OpenAI and Anthropic, instead it badly lags.
Gemini is goofy. Talking to it feels weird. I don’t want to spend half a day re-writing Gemini’s MD file, never mind that its output is of a lower quality compared to Claude and codex.
Meanwhile, Anthropic throttles the hell out of users. I know I always say Google can cure its LLM problems by acquiring Anthropic, but culturally it would not be a good fit. Anthropic moves too fast. Anthropic’s best people would not stay for the acquisition or would leave immediately once the earnout is complete.
Culture starts at the top, and Sundar Pichai is not the right person to lead Google. Either find a replacement for Sundar, or, spin out Google DeepMind and force Demis Hassabis to sink or swim. Mediocrity is unbecoming of Google.
