Which Companies Own Gen AI Intellectual Property?
Today’s AI hype is focused on Generative AI or “Gen AI” as pioneered by companies such as OpenAI. Various other permutations of artificial intelligence (AI) such as machine learning (ML), deep learning, natural language processing (NLP) and more have been with us for many years. AWS, Azure and Google Cloud have offered these core AI services for over a decade to all companies - large and small.
(Speaking of companies large and small, our former Scoprire insurtech product was built with an opensource NLP kernel. Our CEORater product was in the early stages of strategically applying NLP and ML to the platform (CEORater sat on top of AWS)).
Gen AI is a subset of AI. Frankly, I get more excited about applying machine learning to a predictive model to better scale it than I do thinking about potential use cases for Gen AI.
Below is a list of companies that have developed Gen AI intellectual property. My view is that there is far too much hype in the market about Gen AI as we are only in the build stage. Use cases have yet to be defined. Meanwhile, there is low-hanging fruit on the ML side. The challenge with all types of AI is that too few people understand data for companies to fully leverage AI.
I believe that machine learning, NLP and Robotic Process Automation (RPA) have more near-term value creation opportunity than does Gen AI.
